Teton Claims 7,000 Broadband Wireless
Subscribers
9/27/2005
Teton Wireless, a provider of broadband wireless Internet access
and video services in the Mountain States, has achieved 15,000 TV
subscribers and 7,000 broadband customers, according to an announcement
issued by the company.
Teton uses 2.5 GHz licensed spectrum in Idaho Falls, Twin Falls and
Pocatello, Idaho, as well as in Missoula, Mont., to transmit TV
programming. The company started as a cable franchise, became a
"wireless cable" provider later, and then added its high-speed Internet
service about three years ago.
"It's been quite a ride," stated Willis E. "Gene" Twiner, Teton's
president and CEO. "Ten years ago, using 2.5 GHz frequencies for
broadband Internet was still just a dream. Five years ago, hardly anyone
was doing it. Three years ago, we launched our first Internet service in
Montana. Now we're getting ready to roll out a suite of business-focused
Internet services to complement our existing residential services."
Twiner added that Teton is planning to use technologies such as
video-over-IP and non-line-of-sight applications using its broadband
wireless network.
BWB magazine recently surveyed service providers that are using
broadband wireless technology, ranking them by the most subscribers
served (see the
article by Tim Sanders). Had it been included, Teton's
subscriber numbers would have placed it near the top of the list.
