Teton Wireless this month celebrates its 10th anniversary providing
wireless cable and Internet services in Idaho and Montana, with over 15,000
television and 7,000 broadband customers. This milestone marks a passage
from the company's early days of providing a low cost alternative to cable
television, to its current position as one of the ten largest providers of
broadband Internet services in the United States.
President and CEO, Willis E. "Gene" Twiner, has led the company since
1995, establishing the Teton Wireless brand as a provider of affordable,
high quality wireless services.
"The market today is different from what we saw in the early days," said
Mr. Twiner. "Cable television and high speed Internet are no longer luxuries
-- they are necessities, almost utilities, in most homes. People demand
these methods of communication no matter where they live. Folks who live in
rural Idaho and Montana require the same convenience and capabilities as
people in any big city. We're happy to be able to provide what our customers
need, and we're proud to have grown to become one of the top ten wireless
broadband providers in the U.S."
From its beginnings in Port Orchard, Washington, in the mid-1990s, Teton
Wireless has evolved to continuously provide quality services in a changing
landscape. The 2.5 GHz private frequencies that Teton Wireless utilizes were
purchased from the FCC during competitive auctions; next,
state-of-the-industry head ends were built in Idaho Falls, Twin Falls,
Pocatello and Missoula, to transmit cable television programming. Within the
past four years, Teton has added high speed Internet services, and
reorganized for growth by consolidating operations and adding
around-the-clock customer service.
Teton Wireless has also forged unique partnerships, such as that with
Grow Idaho Falls, a non-profit organization promoting economic
development along eastern Idaho's burgeoning technology corridor. The
companies provide WiFi 'hot spots' that allow public access to the Internet
via wireless connections. "We are proud to be working with Teton Wireless to
provide high speed Internet access throughout downtown Idaho Falls," said
Kipp W. Hicks, Executive Director of Grow Idaho Falls. "Together we are able
to provide a state-of-the-art network that you probably wouldn't expect to
find here. It's a plus for local businesses and for tourism, too."
"It's been quite a ride," said Twiner. "Ten years ago, using 2.5 GHz
frequencies for broadband Internet was still just a dream. Five years ago,
hardly anyone was doing it. Three years ago, we launched our first Internet
service in Montana. Now we're getting ready to roll out a suite of business
focused Internet services to complement our existing residential services.
We'll be adding business class connectivity as well as collocation and Web
hosting. And the next ten years look to be just as much fun. And we are
testing exciting new technologies such as video-over-IP and
non-line-of-sight wireless broadband, to name a few."
